Spain Requests Frontex Support Amid Migration Crisis in Ceuta

The Spanish government has officially appealed to the European Union's border protection agency, Frontex, for help in managing a significant migration influx into Ceuta. This Spanish enclave, located on the northern coast of Africa, is currently facing immense pressure.

According to official figures, an estimated 5,000 migrants are present within the territory. The request was formally lodged by Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska, who communicated the need for Frontex's support to Beate Gminder, the European Commission's Director-General for Migration and Home Affairs.

Frontex had previously extended an offer of assistance on August 21, indicating a willingness to support Spain's efforts in handling the complex situation at its borders. The agency's involvement typically includes providing resources, expertise, and personnel to bolster border surveillance and management operations.

This appeal underscores the ongoing challenges faced by European nations in managing irregular migration flows. Ceuta, as an external border of the EU, often becomes a focal point for migrants attempting to reach Europe from Africa.
