Spain’s Toni Bou wins a record 40th world trial title

Toni Bou has reached a milestone no rider has achieved before in international trial motorcycling: 40 world titles. The Repsol Honda rider secured the championship on Sunday in Zelhem, Netherlands, by winning the final race in 2:06.46 and scoring 20 points.

The 39-year-old Spaniard now has 20 outdoor titles and 20 X-Trial championships. He has won every season since taking his first two titles in 2007, his debut year with Repsol.

Jaime Busto finished second in the final race with 17 points, while Bou’s teammate Gabriel Marcelli took third with 15. Bou had won both races on Saturday, collecting 40 points and moving within eight points of the title before Sunday’s decisive result.

His record in X-Trial includes 99 wins and 117 podium finishes from 129 starts. In outdoor competition, he has 175 victories and 234 podiums in 290 participations.

“The 40th title is not only a new crown for his record, but another chapter in a career that continues to grow almost 20 years after he began dominating world trial,” Repsol Honda HRC said in a statement. The team said the achievement expanded a record that had already made Bou the most decorated rider in motorcycling history.
