Spain seeks EU aid for fourth time amid severe natural disasters

Spain has once again turned to the European Union for help, marking the fourth formal request for assistance in the face of significant natural disasters. The latest appeal comes in response to the ongoing forest fires plaguring the country, with the Unidad Militar de Emergencias (UME) requesting at least four fixed-wing firefighting aircraft. Greece has already responded positively, offering two Canadair CL-415 aircraft to aid in the efforts.

This is not the first time Spain has invoked the EU's civil protection mechanism. The country previously sought international support for major forest fires in 2006, when it requested three planes, five helicopters, and 20 specialized trucks. That year, over a hundred fires raged in Galicia, burning more than 82,418 hectares and resulting in five fatalities.

In November 2024, Spain requested EU assistance following devastating floods in Valencia caused by the "dana" storm, which tragically claimed 238 lives. The government sought 100 high-capacity pumping units and 50 experts for technical support and recovery operations, including debris cleanup and waste management.

Last summer's severe forest fires also prompted a significant call for aid. With over 410,000 hectares burned and more than 40 fires active simultaneously across Spain, the government issued a request on August 13, 2025. Initially seeking two Canadair anti-fire planes, the request expanded to include a larger international contingent than ever before. This response saw contributions from France (two Canadair planes, 100 firefighters), Italy (two Canadair aircraft), the Netherlands (two Chinook helicopters), Slovakia (one BlackHawk helicopter), and the Czech Republic (one aerial vehicle).
