Spain seeks international arrest of Plus Ultra shareholder Rodolfo Reyes

A Spanish judge has issued an international arrest warrant for Rodolfo Reyes, the primary shareholder of the airline Plus Ultra, as part of a corruption probe. The investigation, led by Judge José Luis Calama of the Audiencia Nacional, also implicates former Spanish President José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, who faces charges including influence peddling.

Reyes and his wife, María Aurora López, who also has an international arrest warrant issued against her, allegedly took control of Plus Ultra in 2017. The charges against them include embezzlement, influence peddling, belonging to a criminal organization, and money laundering. These accusations stem from a corruption scheme related to the airline's rescue by the Spanish government during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The airline, which primarily operates in Latin America, received 53 million euros in state aid in March 2021. According to the investigation, Reyes and other Plus Ultra executives allegedly devised a plan to misappropriate these public funds. The money was reportedly transferred to shell companies involved in money laundering, with significant amounts also sent to entities linked to Reyes in Panama, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic.

Further details suggest that Reyes "allegedly ordered" public funds to be moved from Plus Ultra's Spanish bank accounts to three shell companies. These transfers were directed to opaque bank accounts in Gibraltar, Switzerland, Montenegro, the United Kingdom, and Mauritius. One of these companies may have been involved in selling gold of unknown origin to a Dubai-based company, with Reyes reportedly participating in some gold trading operations.
