Spain sends troops to Ceuta as thousands of migrants enter from Morocco

Spain has dispatched military units to bolster police forces in its North African territory of Ceuta following a massive influx of migrants from Morocco. An estimated 2,000 to 3,000 individuals entered Ceuta, with many swimming or using flotation devices, while others breached border fences. Video footage captured the scene of hundreds arriving on the shores. This situation recalls a similar event in 2021 when approximately 10,000 migrants arrived in the territory over a few days. The Spanish government recently launched a program to grant legal status to about half a million undocumented migrants, which has reportedly led to a surge in applications. Spain's Supreme Court ruled earlier in July that migrants intercepted at sea attempting to reach Ceuta or Melilla cannot be immediately returned due to border crossing restrictions. The government attributes the current wave to "mafia and criminal organizations" exploiting policies, not the regularization program itself. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska are traveling to Ceuta to meet with security forces and local authorities. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed alarm, calling the images from Ceuta "shocking" and a "concrete threat to Europe's border security." She stated Italy is prepared to take exceptional measures, such as suspending free movement under the Schengen Agreement from Spain.
