Spain targets Italy with border checks amid migrant dispute

Spain has intensified border controls, conducting random checks on more than 4,600 passengers arriving from Italy over a nine-day period in May. The measure, implemented across nine airports including Madrid's Barajas, involved 637 officers and screened 409 flights.

This heightened scrutiny is widely interpreted as a retaliatory move against Italy. It follows Italy's temporary suspension of the Schengen agreement in response to a large influx of migrants into Spain's North African territory of Ceuta in late April. The Spanish Interior Ministry data revealed that during the checks from May 8 to May 16, only one Italian national faced an issue, which was resolved with the assistance of the Italian consulate.

The situation highlights growing tensions within Europe over migration management and border security. The Schengen agreement, designed to facilitate free movement, is facing strain as member states grapple with external pressures and internal policy disagreements. The random checks by Spain underscore the complex diplomatic and security challenges arising from the recent migrant crisis.
