Spain to Urge EU to End Association Agreement with Israel

From Madrid, Spain – Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is taking a firm stance, demanding the European Union sever its association agreement with Israel. This bold move, set to be proposed to the EU, underscores Spain's growing frustration with Israel's actions, particularly its conduct in Gaza.

On Tuesday, the Spanish Government will submit a proposal to the European Union so that the European Union decides on its association agreement with Israel.

Sanchez articulated this position clearly during a political rally, stating that Israel's blatant disregard for international law disqualifies it from being a partner to the EU. "It cannot be a partner of the European Union. It's that simple," he declared, reflecting a sentiment increasingly prevalent within Spain and among some EU member states.

Therefore (Israel) cannot be a partner of the European Union. It's that simple.

The Spanish government, alongside Ireland and Slovenia, has already formally requested a review of the agreement. This initiative stems from the devastating conflict in Gaza, where Israel's military operations have drawn widespread international criticism for civilian casualties. Spain and Ireland, having recognized Palestine as a state in 2024, have been vocal critics of Israeli aggression.
