Spanish parties demand Morocco's exclusion from 2030 World Cup over migrant crisis

Spanish political parties are demanding Morocco's exclusion from co-hosting the 2030 World Cup, citing a recent migrant crisis at the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. The far-right Vox party announced it had formally requested Morocco's removal from the organizing committee, questioning Rabat's capacity to guarantee security for the event. Vox pointed to the record influx of tens of thousands of migrants into Ceuta from Morocco in late July as evidence of security concerns.

Left-wing parties Podemos and Sumar echoed these sentiments, with Podemos leader Pablo Fernández stating that Spain should not co-host with a "dictatorship like Morocco" that allegedly disrespects human rights. A Sumar deputy described the Moroccan monarchy as a regime that "threatens and uses desperate people for its geostrategic interests." These parties argue that Morocco's actions demonstrate an inability to manage its borders and ensure the safety required for a global tournament.

However, these calls are unlikely to succeed. FIFA officially awarded the 2030 World Cup hosting rights to Spain, Portugal, and Morocco in late 2024, with no other bids in contention. Historically, FIFA has not revoked hosting rights from a country, even amid controversies, such as with Qatar's 2022 hosting. The decision on host cities, including the final venue, has not yet been made, and reports suggesting FIFA has committed to specific locations are being denied.
