Speeding, Traffic Violations Cited as Circumstances Clarify in Cannes Boat Collision Case

A judicial investigation is underway following a severe collision between two boats south of the Golfe de la Napoule, near Cannes, which left several people seriously injured and one missing. The incident occurred on Sunday, August 16, around 10:40 p.m. The violence of the impact was evident the following day, with one of the vessels, a 12-meter Pardo type boat flying a French flag, sustaining significant damage to its left flank.

The smaller of the two boats, docked at the quay opposite the harbor master's office, showed a completely caved-in bow. A week after the tragedy, which claimed the life of a 22-year-old man, search operations for the missing individual were relaunched on Sunday, August 23. This followed a report of a body sighted offshore, though no confirmation has been made.

The Marseille public prosecutor's office announced on Tuesday, August 25, that a judicial inquiry was opened the previous day. Preliminary findings from the investigation suggest that the larger Pardo vessel, carrying 11 passengers including the skipper, was traveling at what is described as a "normal speed." However, the headline and initial details point towards excessive speed and a failure to respect traffic regulations as potential factors in the collision.
