‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Breaks ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Box Office Record

Spider-Man has swung past the Avengers at the box office, with "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" shattering the record for the biggest North American opening weekend. The film grossed an estimated $360 million in ticket sales across the U.S. and Canada, Sony Pictures announced Monday.

Sony had projected on Sunday that "Spider-Man" would earn approximately $355 million in its debut weekend, narrowly missing the $357 million record set by "Avengers: Endgame" in 2019. However, a stronger-than-expected Sunday performance for the fourth Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland ultimately propelled it to surpass the previous benchmark.

Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, expressed pride in the achievement, stating, "records are made to be broken, but we will take great pride in this one, for as long as we hold it."

Before "Avengers: Endgame," no film had ever opened with over $300 million domestically. The previous record holders included "Avengers: Infinity War" ($257 million in 2018) and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" ($247 million in 2015). Even during the pandemic in December 2021, the third Holland-led Spider-Man film, "No Way Home," debuted with $260 million on its way to a $1.9 billion global total.

The combined success of "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" and "The Odyssey," which feature co-stars Holland, Zendaya, and Jon Bernthal, also fueled a record-breaking weekend for movie theaters overall in the U.S. and Canada. According to Rentrak, the domestic box office has seen a more than 15% increase from last year, with ticket sales exceeding $6.2 billion to date.
