Spider-Man soars to huge US$355 million opening in North America

Sony and Marvel's latest superhero installment, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," starring Tom Holland, has swung into theaters with a colossal US$355 million opening weekend in North America. This impressive debut ranks it as the second-highest domestic box office opening of all time, narrowly trailing behind "Avengers: Endgame" (2019) which grossed US$357 million, according to Box Office Mojo (figures not adjusted for inflation).

The film, which also features Zendaya, Mark Ruffalo, Florence Pugh, and Sadie Sink, sees Peter Parker grappling with isolation and personal transformation after erasing his identity from the world. Industry analysts are hailing the opening as a major success, especially after a nine-week drought of major action titles during the summer box office season. "The market is ripe-ripe-ripe for this film," commented David A. Gross, an analyst at Franchise Entertainment Research.

"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" has also demonstrated significant global appeal, earning an additional US$573 million from international markets. This brings the film's staggering worldwide total to US$928 million. Gross noted that overseas business is expected to account for over 60 percent of the global total, with positive early returns from China.

Meanwhile, other major releases are also performing strongly. Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" secured second place with US$51 million, bringing its domestic total to nearly US$400 million. The combination of a legacy superhero sequel and a big original production like "The Odyssey" is driving box office numbers to new heights. Animated features "Toy Story 5" and "Minions & Monsters" took third and fourth place respectively, while Disney's live-action remake "Moana" landed in fifth.
