Sri Lanka Railways Bans Social Media Use During Work Hours

Sri Lanka Railways has implemented a new policy restricting social media usage for its employees during official duties. A special circular issued by the department prohibits staff from accessing social media while on duty.

The directive stems from observations of certain railway officials and employees sharing sensitive operational information publicly via social media platforms during work hours. The department stated that this practice poses a significant risk to the reliability of the railway service, passenger safety, and institutional discipline.

Under the new circular, the authority to release official information from the Railway Department to external parties or the media is strictly limited. Only the General Manager of Railways, the official media spokesperson, and the information officer are authorized to disseminate such information.

This measure aims to safeguard sensitive data and maintain the integrity of railway operations, ensuring that official communications are handled through designated channels.
