Sri Lanka's Ambassador to Bucharest: 'We want a long-term partnership with Romania'

Romania and Sri Lanka are actively pursuing a strengthened long-term partnership, with both nations preparing to celebrate the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2027. The establishment of the Sri Lankan Embassy in Bucharest in 2023 has significantly revitalized bilateral ties, fostering concrete projects across various sectors. These include investments, trade, education, tourism, information technology, and renewable energy.

As the ambassador of Sri Lanka to Romania, my main objective is to further consolidate the long-standing friendship between the two countries, by expanding cooperation in areas of common interest and mutual benefit.

Ambassador Samantha Pathirana highlighted the primary objective of consolidating the enduring friendship between the two countries by expanding cooperation in mutually beneficial areas. He emphasized deepening collaboration in trade and investment, encouraging partnerships in education, tourism, culture, agriculture, IT, and renewable energy, and facilitating stronger connections between their business communities.

Pathirana assessed the relationship as positive and on an upward trajectory, noting a shift from merely maintaining diplomatic ties to developing practical cooperation. He pointed to high-level visits, regular diplomatic consultations, and the embassy's opening as key drivers of this dynamic evolution. Sri Lanka regards Romania as a crucial partner within Europe, offering a potential gateway to the broader European Union market.
