Sri Lankan Prime Minister Meets Bhutan’s Education Minister

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya held bilateral talks with Bhutan’s Education and Skills Development Minister Yisang De Thapa during her visit to Bhutan, with education cooperation taking center stage.

The discussions examined ways to strengthen collaboration between Sri Lanka and Bhutan through greater direct participation and coordination between their governments. The two sides also considered implementing programs of mutual importance.

Education, higher education and vocational training were identified as areas where cooperation could expand. The talks included efforts to create more opportunities for students, educators and educational institutions in both countries, while also identifying new areas for collaboration.

One specific proposal involved giving Bhutanese students opportunities to pursue degree programs at Sri Lankan universities. The discussions focused particularly on health sciences, including dentistry, medicine and physiotherapy. The two sides also considered expanding access to postgraduate studies in medical and health sciences at Sri Lankan universities, alongside stronger cooperation between universities and other educational institutions in both countries.
