SSS arraigns man for soliciting funds for ISWAP, Boko Haram following kidnap incident

The State Security Service (SSS) has arraigned Samaila Kaigama on charges of soliciting funds for terrorist organizations ISWAP and Boko Haram. Prosecutors allege Kaigama raised money from the public, intending the proceeds to finance terror activities, while also negotiating the release of kidnap victims earlier this year.

Appearing before Justice Salim Ibrahim at the Federal High Court in Abuja, Kaigama faces four charges. These include concealing information that could have aided in the arrest of terrorists and preventing their acts. The prosecution claims the offenses occurred in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State between January and June. The charges, however, lack specific details about the kidnapping incident and its victims that prompted Kaigama's alleged fundraising.

Prosecution lawyer, Caliatus Eze, urged the court to remand the defendant in the protective custody of the SSS in the interest of national security and the defendant.

Kaigama pleaded not guilty to all charges. Prosecution lawyer Caliatus Eze requested his remand in SSS custody for national security reasons. However, Justice Ibrahim ordered Kaigama to be remanded in SSS custody but granted him unrestricted access to his lawyer and family members. The judge also mandated adequate medical attention for the defendant. The trial is set to begin on September 24.
