Stable booking numbers for youth hostels in Lower Saxony

Youth hostels across Lower Saxony are maintaining stable booking figures, presenting a contrast to declines reported in other German states like Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The three regional associations within Lower Saxony, Unterweser-Ems, Hannover, and Nordmark, report good occupancy rates for the summer season.

We have many destinations that are booked for a long weekend, which usually happens more short-term than a longer holiday on the North or Baltic Sea.

Sebastian Gonschorek, spokesperson for the Hannover association, noted that bookings, particularly from families, are often spontaneous and made for extended weekends rather than longer seaside holidays. This trend towards shorter, more immediate bookings is observed across the industry. Katharina Pauly, spokesperson for the Nordmark association, which covers areas bordering the North and Baltic Seas, expressed satisfaction with bookings from families, school classes, various groups, and individual travelers, expressing confidence in meeting the previous year's levels.

While bookings for school classes and groups remain stable, Pauly observed a recent trend of reduced participant numbers in some holiday programs, often announced on short notice. The increase in spontaneous bookings among families and individual guests is attributed to the current economic and social climate. Pre-bookings for August are currently about 15 percent below the previous year's level, reflecting this cautious approach by families.

We only notice that groups such as holiday camps are sometimes reducing their participant numbers at short notice.

In the Unterweser-Ems region, spokesperson Gesa Hauschild reported slightly lower group bookings compared to last year, with a noticeable trend towards smaller group sizes. The association has expanded its capacity by adding four new "Deichhäuser" directly on the North Sea coast near Schillighörn. These new accommodations feature sustainable designs, including green roofs, heat pumps, and photovoltaic systems, aligning with environmental considerations.
