Brown initially suspected the jacket might be valuable after finding a photograph of Chamberlain wearing a similar yellow jacket. Noticing specific stitching details and the jacket's unusually large size, Brown deduced it was unlikely to be a replica. A post on social media led to Sotheby's stepping in to handle the auction.

Sotheby's authenticated the jacket, describing it as a rarity. "The photo match for such a piece from a final series and from a player of this era is a rarity," the auction house stated, emphasizing its significance as a piece of sports history. The final bid after 48 offers significantly surpassed the initial purchase price, though it fell short of some estimates that had predicted a price of up to $250,000.
