Ecuadorian skywatchers are preparing for the "Stag Moon" on July 29, 2026, when the lunar disk will be fully illuminated, presenting a captivating sight. This astronomical event, also known as the July full moon, is of significant interest to enthusiasts across the country.

The name "Stag Moon" is rooted in the traditions of North American indigenous peoples. According to the Quito Astronomical Observatory, this period aligns with the time when male deer grow new antlers. The name thus evokes themes of renewal, strength, and growth within ancient cultural narratives.

The full moon phase is set to occur precisely at 09:35 ECT on July 29. At this moment, the Earth, Sun, and Moon will align in opposition, allowing for the observation of the moon's entire face illuminated by the sun. This event marks the midpoint of the lunar cycle, which typically spans 29.5 days.

While the Stag Moon will be a notable spectacle, it will not qualify as a supermoon this year. The full moon phase does not coincide with the moon's closest orbital point to Earth, known as perigee. Nevertheless, the natural satellite will maintain sufficient brightness to stand out against the night sky. The best viewing opportunities will be on the nights of July 29-30, shortly after sunset, though a visible illuminated disk can also be seen on July 28 and 30.
