Stairs collapse in adjacent building in Küçükçekmece; residents trapped in apartments

A building in Istanbul's Küçükçekmece district experienced a partial collapse of its internal staircase due to foundation work on an adjacent construction site. The incident occurred on Çatal Çeşme Street in the Halkalı Merkez neighborhood.

Following the collapse, police and fire department teams were dispatched to the scene. Firefighters used ladders to rescue residents who had urgent needs to leave their apartments. However, some residents chose to remain in their homes, unable to exit the building.

Crews began constructing a temporary staircase to facilitate safe passage in and out of the building. In a striking scene, one resident lowered a basket from their apartment window to receive bread from someone on the street.

"When I woke up, I saw the stairs had collapsed," said Kağan İnanç, a resident. "We called the teams, and they have been working for 2-3 hours. We cannot enter or exit the building. We are requesting support from the authorities. It collapsed during construction work. There are people trapped inside; the fire department took out those with urgent needs. Others are waiting inside right now."

Separately, workers at the construction site reportedly attacked journalists who were present to cover the event, attempting to prevent them from filming.
