Stall Fire in Bernsgrün Kills Hundreds of Pigs, Causes Million-Euro Losses

Several hundred pigs died after a pig barn caught fire at an agricultural business in Bernsgrün, in the city of Zeulenroda-Triebes. The damage to the buildings and animals reached at least 1 million euros, according to the situation center of Thuringia’s Interior Ministry.

Flames rose several meters above the site, and the fire spread beyond the pig barn to other buildings. Firefighters reportedly had to let some structures burn under control. The operation continued late into the night.

Authorities warned residents about heavy smoke and toxic fire gases. They urged people to avoid the affected area, keep windows and doors closed, and turn off ventilation and air-conditioning systems.

At present, the fire services in the surrounding area are unfortunately once again involved in a major operation in Bernsgrün.

Firefighters managed to rescue some animals before the barn collapsed shortly after they arrived. The smoke column could reportedly be seen from more than 30 kilometers away.

The incident followed another fire at the same agricultural business about two weeks earlier. That blaze also reportedly caused damage of around 1 million euros. The Bernsgrün fire service described the latest response as another major operation in the area.
