State of Mexico Foils Extortion, Saves Over 30 Million Pesos

The State of Mexico has successfully thwarted extortion attempts, preventing criminals from acquiring more than 30.6 million pesos in just under a month. This achievement is a result of a focused strategy implemented by the government, coordinated through the Mesa de Coordinación para la Construcción de la Paz, led by Governor Delfina Gómez Álvarez.

Between May 28 and June 24, 2026, the program against extortion received 3,457 reports. These reports allowed authorities to activate immediate support mechanisms and provide guidance to victims, effectively stopping them from making the demanded payments to criminals. The reported incidents included various forms of extortion, such as phone scams, malicious calls, and electronic extortion.

Authorities noted a significant decrease in the amount demanded by extortionists during the week of June 18-24 compared to the first week of the reporting period. The total amount demanded dropped by 45 percent, from over 12 million pesos to 6.5 million pesos, indicating the strategy's growing effectiveness.

Governor Gómez Álvarez reiterated her call for the public to report any extortion attempts by dialing 089, a service available 24/7. This hotline allows for the identification of the crime's modality and provides immediate assistance to protect potential victims and their assets, thereby safeguarding their financial well-being.
