Steenbergen wins European 100m freestyle gold; Van Wijk takes silver

Marrit Steenbergen claimed the European Championship title in the 100-meter freestyle on Tuesday evening. Competing at the European Aquatics Championships in Paris, the 26-year-old Dutch swimmer clocked a winning time of 51.90 seconds. Her compatriot, Milou van Wijk, 21, secured the silver medal with a time of 52.71 seconds, narrowly beating Italy's Sara Curtis by one-hundredth of a second.

Van Wijk led at the halfway mark, according to news agency ANP, but Steenbergen accelerated in the second 50 meters to build a significant lead. Steenbergen's winning time also improved her own championship record. The 100m freestyle is considered swimming's most prestigious event, featuring intense international competition. Steenbergen, a two-time world champion, was a favorite for the title, having set a new world record of 51.68 seconds in June, breaking a nine-year-old record.

These performances by Steenbergen and Van Wijk secured the first Dutch medals at the ongoing European Championships in Paris. For Steenbergen, it is her second European title in the 100m freestyle, while it is Van Wijk's first EK medal. Steenbergen has another opportunity to win a medal later Tuesday evening in the mixed 4x100m medley relay.
