Step-by-step guide for contactless passport renewal for Nigerians abroad

Nigerians living abroad can now renew their passports using an updated contactless application system, according to the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS). The service has released a step-by-step guide detailing the digital process, encouraging diaspora citizens to utilize the new platform.

The updated procedure begins with visiting the official NIS Passport Application portal. Applicants must then select 'Continue,' choose 'Apply for Renewal/Re-issue,' and create an account. Identity verification is conducted using a National Identification Number (NIN) and date of birth. Following this, applicants complete the application form, select their preferred processing embassy or high commission, and upload necessary documents.

Payment of the passport fee for the chosen booklet is required, after which applicants receive an Application ID and Reference Number. The next crucial step involves selecting the 'Contactless' option under the Application Status/Book Appointment section. Applicants must review the contactless instructions and confirm their opt-in. They then need to download the NIS Mobile App, log in, select Passport Application Services, and proceed to Passport Biometrics Enrolment.

Upon successful completion of biometrics via Contactless App, applicant should print-out the Application form, passport booklet payment, biometric payment, current Passport and enclose all in a self-addressed return envelope to the processing embassy selected during the application process.

Using their Application ID and Reference Number, applicants check their eligibility for contactless biometrics capture, including facial images and fingerprints, and complete liveness verification. A separate contactless service fee must also be paid before submitting biometrics. The NIS cautions that not all applicants will qualify for the contactless process; those deemed ineligible will be directed to book a physical appointment at their selected embassy or high commission. Successful contactless biometric enrollees must then forward additional documents, including their printed application form, payment receipts, current passport, and a self-addressed return envelope, to their chosen processing mission.
