Step by step: Nigerians abroad can renew passports without visiting an embassy

Nigerians living abroad can now renew their passports without visiting an embassy for biometric enrollment through a new contactless application system.

Applicants begin on the official Nigerian Immigration Service passport portal by selecting "Apply from Outside Nigeria" and then "Apply for Renewal or Reissue." They must create an account and verify their identity with their National Identification Number and date of birth. After completing the form, selecting a processing embassy and uploading the required documents, applicants pay the passport fee and receive an application ID and reference number.

Applicants can choose a physical or contactless appointment. Those eligible for the contactless service select the contactless option in the application status or appointment section and follow the guide provided. They must download the NRS mobile app, choose passport biometric enrollment and enter their application details to check eligibility. Eligible applicants then capture their facial image and fingerprints through the app and submit the biometrics for review.

After successful review and confirmation of eligibility, applicants pay the contactless service fee. Those who do not qualify can return to the portal and book a physical appointment at their chosen embassy or high commission.

Applicants must print the application form and retrieve their current national passport. Both should be placed in a self-addressed return envelope and sent to the selected processing embassy. Applications can be tracked two weeks after submission through the tracking portal or the NRS mobile app. The immigration service advises applicants to use only official channels.
