Stevens scores three TDs as Roughriders edge Elks 28-26

Backup quarterback Tommy Stevens powered the Saskatchewan Roughriders to a narrow 28-26 victory over the Edmonton Elks on Saturday, evening their season series and improving their record to 5-2. The win propelled the Roughriders into sole possession of second place in the CFL's West Division, while the Elks, who lead the division, fell to 6-2.

The close contest was a stark contrast to the previous week's matchup, which the Elks won 36-34 on a career-best 57-yard field goal by Vincent Blanchard as time expired. Saturday's game also saw multiple lead changes and a significant weather delay of over an hour in the third quarter.

Edmonton opened the scoring with a touchdown run by Justin Rankin, but Saskatchewan quickly responded after an 87-yard kickoff return set up a Stevens touchdown plunge. The teams traded field goals and touchdowns throughout the game. Stevens was instrumental, scoring three one-yard touchdowns, including one that was awarded after the Elks were penalized for having too many men on the field near their own goal line.

Despite a late push from the Elks, who scored twice in the fourth quarter, Saskatchewan managed to run out the clock. The Roughriders were without running back AJ Ouellette due to a knee injury, while the Elks saw a stronger crowd of 31,757 attend the game, reflecting their recent improved play.
