Stomach Cancer Survival Rate Lower in Women Under 50 Than in Men of Same Age Group

Women under the age of 50 experience lower survival rates from stomach cancer compared to men in the same age bracket, according to a new study. Researchers from Bundang Seoul National University Hospital analyzed data from 14,839 patients diagnosed with stomach cancer between 2003 and 2023.

The study revealed significant survival rate disparities between genders across different age groups. While younger women under 50 had poorer outcomes, older women aged 60 and above showed higher survival rates than their male counterparts. The average age of diagnosis was also lower for female patients.

Researchers attribute these differences to distinct patterns of stomach cancer development in men and women. The study noted that diffuse-type stomach cancer, characterized by the spreading of cancer cells along the stomach wall, is more prevalent in women. This type of cancer is known to be more challenging to detect and treat early, often leading to less favorable prognoses.
