Filmmaker Christopher Nolan has urged audiences not to feel pressured into seeing his latest film, 'Oppenheimer,' exclusively in IMAX theaters, especially amid reports of exorbitant resale ticket prices. Nolan acknowledged the sold-out status of IMAX screenings as "good news" but emphasized that the film's visual quality is preserved even in standard theaters. "You can fully enjoy the advantages of IMAX even in a regular theater," Nolan stated, reassuring viewers that the film's "overwhelming resolution" ensures a premium experience regardless of the format. This comes as reports surface of 'Oppenheimer' IMAX tickets being resold for hundreds of thousands of South Korean won, and even up to $1,000 internationally, due to extreme demand. Nolan, who famously shot 'Oppenheimer' entirely on IMAX film, acknowledged the significant technical challenges and costs involved. The production utilized 640 kilometers of IMAX film, costing approximately $3.2 million, and required frequent camera changes and custom noise-canceling equipment. However, he maintained that these efforts were crucial for immersing the audience in the film's narrative. During his appearance on the tvN show "You Quiz on the Block" with actor Matt Damon, Nolan reflected on the unique communal experience of watching a film in a theater. "Watching a movie together with other audience members in a theater is a very special experience," he said, contrasting it with the solitary act of reading a novel. He also shared that his own cinematic awakening came at age seven after watching 'Star Wars,' a film he saw 12 times. Nolan and Damon decided to donate the $1 million prize money they won on the show to a children's welfare organization for underprivileged youth to watch movies, underscoring their belief in the accessibility of the cinematic experience. The film has already grossed over $1.12 billion worldwide, making it Nolan's highest-grossing film to date.
