Stored Pear Prices Double, But Fresh Produce Surges to Ease Consumer Burden

The price of stored pears has more than doubled compared to last year. However, consumers may find some relief as harvests of fresh fruits like apples, pears, grapes, and peaches, along with vegetables such as tomatoes, watermelons, and cucumbers, are set to increase. This expanded supply is expected to stabilize overall agricultural prices.

According to the Korea Rural Economic Institute's August agricultural outlook, favorable growing conditions this year have led to increased production for most fruits and vegetables. Apple production is projected to rise by 19%, pears by 16%, and greenhouse-grown mandarins by 7%. Other fruits like grapes and peaches also show expected increases in harvest volume. This surge in supply is forecast to drive down prices for these key fruits compared to the previous year.

While fresh produce prices are expected to ease, stored pears continue to command high prices due to supply shortages. The wholesale price of 7-month-old Shinseong pears has surged by 110.3% year-on-year due to reduced arrivals. However, the market anticipates a gradual stabilization once new pear harvests begin this month.

Vegetable supplies are also set to grow. General tomato production is expected to increase by 7.9%, cherry tomatoes by 5.1%, watermelons by 4.4%, zucchini by 5.2%, and cucumbers by 6.0%. This growth is attributed to expanded cultivation areas, particularly in the Gangwon region, and favorable growing conditions. The wholesale price for a 5kg box of general tomatoes in August is projected to be around 14,000 won, down from 16,900 won last year.

Despite the positive outlook, the report cautions that prolonged heatwaves could pose a risk. Extreme heat might lead to sun-scalded apples and reduced fruit quality, as well as hinder the growth of vegetables. These weather conditions could become a variable factor influencing actual harvest volumes and prices.
