Storms Cause Blackouts and Flooding Across Mexico City Neighborhoods

Mexico City experienced significant disruptions Friday as a powerful storm swept through various neighborhoods, bringing heavy rain, localized flooding, and power outages.

The Del Valle neighborhood in the Benito Juárez borough was particularly affected. Residents reported a loud noise, after which a lightning strike on a utility pole at the intersection of Matías Romero and Pestalozzi streets is believed to have caused a short circuit in a transformer. This resulted in a widespread interruption of the electricity supply. Police, firefighters, and personnel from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) were dispatched to the scene to manage the emergency and begin restoring power. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in connection with the incident.

In Azcapotzalco, heavy rainfall led to substantial flooding at the intersection of Herreros and Cultura Náhuatl in the El Rosario neighborhood. Water accumulated to a depth of up to 20 centimeters across approximately 200 meters of the street. Personnel from the Secretariat of Integral Risk Management and Civil Protection (SGIRyPC) and the Heroic Fire Department worked to drain the water and clear debris from the drainage system, gradually reducing the water levels.

Meanwhile, in the Santa María Aztahuacan neighborhood of Iztapalapa, emergency responders addressed another flooded area. They worked to evacuate accumulated rainwater from a section of road roughly 100 meters long. Authorities continue to monitor and address the impacts of the storm across the capital, ensuring public safety and working towards a full recovery from the weather-related incidents.
