Strait of Hormuz Traffic Higher Than Data Shows, UK Agency Reports

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) center has reported a significant increase in ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global energy supplies. According to a report released Friday, an average of 29 cargo ships navigated the strait daily over the past seven days. In total, 103 ships entered the Persian Gulf and 101 departed during the same period.

This observed increase contrasts with data from shipping intelligence providers such as Kpler. These firms often report single-digit daily transits through the strait. Their analysis relies on data from ship transponders, which have frequently been deactivated in the region. The UKMTO, however, utilizes Automatic Identification System (AIS) data, supplemented by additional intelligence sources. While the agency does not provide specific details on its intelligence gathering, it maintains continuous communication with shipping companies operating in the area. This allows them to report on attacks and accidents effectively.

The Strait of Hormuz has been a focal point of geopolitical tensions, particularly between Iran and the United States. Before recent escalations, the strait was generally open for maritime traffic. The UKMTO's findings suggest a more active waterway than previously indicated by some data sources, highlighting the complexities of monitoring maritime activity in this strategically vital region.
