Strawberry Season Kicks Off in Saxony-Anhalt Amidst Rising Costs

The highly anticipated strawberry season has officially kicked off in Saxony-Anhalt, with local farms opening their fields for eager pickers. Despite a slight delay of about half a week attributed to recent weather patterns, the region's farmers are optimistic about the upcoming harvest. Oliver Sommerfeld, an agricultural advisor for the Saxony-Anhalt Farmers' Association, confirmed that the late frost this year did not pose a significant threat, paving the way for what is expected to be a bountiful yield of fresh, local strawberries.

However, consumers should brace for slightly higher prices at the farm gate. According to the Farmers' Association, the cost of locally grown strawberries is projected to rise by 10 to 15 percent compared to the previous year. This increase is primarily driven by the escalating minimum wage implemented at the beginning of the year and other significant hikes in production expenses. Last year, self-picked strawberries cost around 5.50 euros per kilogram, while pre-picked ones were priced at 10.50 euros.

The rising costs are also contributing to a shrinking cultivation area for strawberries in Saxony-Anhalt, a trend observed since 2023. Farmers are increasingly finding it challenging to compete with the lower prices of imported strawberries. In 2023, the state cultivated 173 hectares of strawberries, a figure that may continue to decline as economic pressures mount. Despite these challenges, the availability of fresh, locally sourced strawberries remains a cherished tradition and a welcome sign of spring for many residents.
