"Strenči is the world in miniature" – an unusual contemporary art exhibition on display

The town of Strenči, Latvia, is currently hosting an unusual contemporary art exhibition that transforms public spaces into artistic installations. Organized as part of the Valmiera municipality's project "Kurtuve: Contemporary Culture for Everyone," the exhibition features works by the creative association "Orbīta" and other artists, placed in various locations throughout the town.

One notable aspect of the exhibition is the use of sound. Four minutes before the top of each hour, radios placed in Strenči's Market Square begin playing a song about the town. This auditory element adds a unique layer to the urban landscape, inviting residents and visitors to engage with the art in unexpected ways.

Art curator Artūrs Punte provided insight into a specific artwork located in the park of the local psychoneurological hospital. The installation, situated in a designated area where patients can smoke and converse freely, draws attention to the absence of video surveillance. The artists placed subtle inscriptions in three gazebos within the hospital grounds, highlighting a "zone of freedom" where individuals can behave as they feel without being filmed, contrasting with the hospital's usual rules and schedules.

Some artists involved in the "Kurtuve" project interpreted the concept of "culture for everyone" quite literally. Eva Vēvere and Laura Prikule, representing the creative association "Poetic Robotics," are among those who have contributed pieces that engage directly with the community and the environment of Strenči, making the town itself a canvas for contemporary artistic expression.

We noticed that it is a kind of small zone of freedom in the hospital, where there are its own order, its own prohibitions and rules that must be followed. And here, where people come to smoke and talk, smoking is allowed, you don't have to rush anywhere, don't follow rules, schedules, and so on. And then we thought that another aspect of freedom could be pointed out, that video surveillance is not carried out here. No one is filming you, behave freely, as you feel.
