Student allegedly assaulted by group in South Jakarta

A 20-year-old university student identified by the initials AHP was allegedly assaulted in Kalibata, South Jakarta, after a dispute escalated into a confrontation. The incident was reported to South Jakarta Metro Police on Aug. 26.

Ismunanda Umafagur, secretary of the Jakarta chapter of LBH GP Ansor, said the student is the son of a former Jakarta Banser commander. He said the dispute began after AHP met friends to work on a university assignment and later met a former high-school senior.

During that conversation, AHP allegedly mentioned the name of a person who later became one of the suspected attackers. That person then contacted him through direct messages, asking what they had discussed. The dispute allegedly grew from an offence taken by one of the suspects, who believed AHP had referred to him.

The parties later agreed to meet in Kalibata to clarify the matter. According to Ismunanda, the suspect arrived with friends in three cars, with about eight people involved. One of AHP’s friends allegedly saw one of the suspects take what appeared to be a firearm from a car. AHP tried to run, fell and was then allegedly attacked by several people.

Redim Okto, deputy chairman of GP Ansor’s Jakarta regional board, welcomed the police response but called for concrete action. “This must involve more concrete and further action so that the case is promptly followed up,” he said, pointing to witnesses, evidence and CCTV footage.
