Student Dies in Peru School Structure Collapse During Demolition

A tragic accident at the Petronila Perea de Ferrando educational institution in Iquitos, Peru, resulted in the death of an 18-year-old student and injuries to another. The collapse of a concrete structure occurred while students were involved in demolishing an old water tank on school grounds. The Ministry of Education stated the demolition lacked authorization.

The deceased student was identified as Taylor Segundo Yaicate Ricopa. The injured student, Antony Gárate Ríos, also 18, was taken to the Regional Hospital of Loreto and is reported to be out of danger. Following the incident, the Sixth Provincial Criminal Prosecutor's Office of Maynas ordered the detention of the school's director and a teacher to investigate their potential responsibility.

Social media footage shows students, reportedly from fourth and fifth year of secondary school, using ropes to try and pull down the structure in the schoolyard. This pre-tragedy footage indicates students were directly engaged in a physically risky task within the educational facility. After the collapse, parents, neighbors, and police officers participated in rescue efforts. Heavy machinery was required to remove the debris and free the trapped students.
