Suburbs Around Bordeaux Evacuated as Wildfires Rage

Thousands of people have been evacuated from suburbs surrounding Bordeaux as wildfires in the region show no signs of abating. Authorities in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine et de la Gironde administration confirmed that areas including Le Haillan, Eysines, and Merignac were being cleared.

French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu reported that more than 141,000 people have been evacuated from the Gironde and Landes regions, areas initially impacted by the fires this week. Lecornu described the situation on X, stating, "The fires which are hitting our country have reached a level that has never been seen before." The French army has been mobilized to support firefighting efforts.

Data from Reuters Climate Monitor indicates that temperatures in the Aquitaine region have averaged 32.2 degrees Celsius (90 degrees Fahrenheit) this month. This figure is 7.3 degrees Celsius (13.1 degrees Fahrenheit) above the typical July high recorded between 1961 and 1990, highlighting the extreme heat contributing to the ongoing crisis.
