Suicide bomber kills 14 at Pakistan anti-militant rally

A suicide bombing at an anti-militant rally in Pakistan's Swat Valley has killed at least 14 people and injured over two dozen, according to officials. The attack occurred in Kabal, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where demonstrators had gathered near a police station, voicing demands for peace and chanting anti-militant slogans.

Witnesses reported that speakers at the rally had just accused authorities of failing to act decisively against militants. The demonstrators emphasized that residents desired a life free from fear, recalling years of violence that had previously devastated the region. The Swat Valley was once a stronghold for Islamic militants before a Pakistani military operation in 2007 restored government control.

Officials confirmed that at least nine civilians and five officers were among the dead. The bombing has raised fears of a resurgence by the Pakistani Taliban, known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which is allied with Afghanistan's Taliban rulers. The TTP has been seeking to regain a foothold in the region, prompting residents to hold frequent anti-Taliban rallies.

No group has immediately claimed responsibility, but suspicion is likely to fall on the TTP, which Pakistan accuses Afghanistan's Taliban government of harboring.
