Süleymancılar investigation: Former interior minister İdris Naim Şahin’s testimony revealed

Former Interior Minister İdris Naim Şahin has been released under judicial control after giving testimony as a suspect in an investigation led by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office. The court imposed a ban on leaving Turkey.

Şahin denied the accusations. He said he did not know Hilmi Tuna Kuriş or Erhan Yılmaz, although a vehicle assigned to his name was used in an attempt to take Kuriş abroad. Şahin said he last used the vehicle in June and did not know who drove it afterward. He acknowledged knowing Melih Özmen, who was detained in the vehicle, and said he had rented a vehicle from Özmen’s company.

Prosecutors also questioned Şahin about allegations that Süleyman Hilmi Kalcı brought women from Belarus to Turkey for prostitution networks, filmed bureaucrats with hidden cameras for blackmail, and helped steer public tenders. Şahin rejected any connection to those claims. He said he knew Kalcı, who lived in Belarus and ran a phone shop there, but said he did not know that Kalcı brought women to Turkey or forced them into prostitution.

Şahin said he had warned Özmen not to join protests after seeing reports that some people linked to the group had gathered at various locations. He said he contacted his former adviser, Ömür Yücel, and told him about Özmen’s past connection to courses associated with the group. Şahin also denied allegations attributed to Yücel’s testimony.
