Sumatra Utara Authorities Monitor Market Amid Soaring Chicken Prices

North Sumatra's provincial government is taking swift action to address a sharp increase in broiler chicken prices, which have climbed to Rp50,000 per kilogram in traditional markets. The Regional Inflation Control Team (TPID) Sumut has dispatched teams to investigate the situation firsthand.

Dedi Jaminsyah Putra Harahap, head of the North Sumatra Industry, Trade, Energy, and Mineral Resources Agency, stated that chicken prices in Medan currently range from Rp45,000 to Rp50,000 per kilogram. He emphasized that the monitoring is a direct directive from the Governor, who wants the government to understand the real conditions in the field, not just rely on reports.

The joint team is examining prices, stock levels, and the smoothness of essential goods distribution in Medan's traditional markets. This effort aims to ensure food security and maintain affordable prices for the public. The monitoring involves multiple agencies, including the Food Security Agency and the Investment and One-Stop Integrated Service Agency, in coordination with Bank Indonesia, the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Perum Bulog, and local governments.

Beyond chicken, TPID Sumut is also tracking other key commodities affecting inflation and public purchasing power. These include beef, rice, cooking oil, chili peppers, eggs, and various types of fish and onions. The agency is paying particular attention to broiler chicken prices due to their significant rise above government-set reference prices.
