Summer roadworks to cause severe traffic delays across Flanders

Road users in Flanders should brace for considerable disruption this summer as extensive roadworks commence on key highways, notably the E19 and E17. The Flemish Agency for Roads and Traffic (AWV) has released an overview of the projects, warning of potential traffic jams.

The E19 will see significant disruption at the Machelen interchange (E19/R0) from August 10 to September 26 due to structural maintenance on the connection to Brussels' inner ring road. Further along the E19, structural maintenance near Mechelen towards Brussels is expected to cause severe delays until July 17, with additional work scheduled in Rumst during August.

On the E17, severe congestion is anticipated in Zwijnaarde towards Kortrijk from August 3 to 9. The Zwijnaarde interchange will also experience closures of connecting ramps from the E40 (Brussels and Ostend) towards Kortrijk. Between Destelbergen and Gentbrugge, heavy traffic is expected on the E17 towards Ghent from August 10 to 15, with ramps from the R4 closed.

Other affected routes include the E40, where the Goedingebrug in Drongen will undergo renovation for ten nights starting August 24, impacting traffic towards Ostend. The A12 in Meise will undergo structural maintenance until the end of September in both directions. Bridge joints on the E40 in Kraainem will be maintained from August 3 to 31, causing moderate disruption.

Further works include road surface repairs on the E314 between Aarschot and Tielt-Winge during the first two weekends of September. In Antwerp, the E19 will experience limited nighttime disruptions in early July and August due to work on the Craeybeckxtunnel. Additionally, a bridge will be installed on the E34 in Zwijndrecht, requiring a nighttime closure on August 22-23. Moderate delays are also expected in West Flanders on the E17 towards Kortrijk and France due to bridge renovations.
