Summer Weather to Continue for Now: Kolydas Forecasts Heat Through Early September

Summer conditions are expected to continue into the first 10 days of September, according to meteorologist Theodoros Kolydas. His forecast points to high temperatures and little meaningful relief across Greece.

Kolydas based his assessment on the movement of air masses at 1,500 meters, or 850 hectopascals, an indicator of the atmosphere’s thermal pattern. He said a warm air mass would strengthen over the Aegean, eastern Greece and the eastern Mediterranean around Thursday, September 3.

That pattern is expected to keep surface temperatures high, especially in areas less protected by the meltemi or a sea breeze. The same conditions are forecast to continue without major change through Sunday, September 6. The broader warm trend is expected to last through Friday, September 11, with southern and eastern parts of the country remaining exposed to the heat.

For Wednesday, September 2, generally clear weather is forecast. Temporary cloud will develop over western and northern mainland areas from midday, bringing local rain or showers mainly in the mountains. Isolated thunderstorms may occur in the mountains of Epirus, Macedonia, Western Central Greece and possibly Thessaly and the Peloponnese. Conditions in Central Macedonia and Thessaly may continue overnight.

Winds will come from the north at 3 to 4 Beaufort in the west and 4 to 6 in the east. Temperatures are expected to reach 34 to 36 degrees Celsius on the mainland and locally in the Ionian islands, the eastern Aegean islands and the Dodecanese. Some mainland areas could reach 36 to 37 degrees, while other islands are forecast to see 30 to 34 degrees. African dust is also expected to move into western areas. Kolydas noted that actual ground temperatures will depend on local conditions, winds and the influence of the sea.
