Sun Ra Arkestra's manifesto echoes in Istanbul

Istanbul experienced a "cosmic" musical gathering in July as the Sun Ra Arkestra delivered a two-day performance that resonated deeply with attendees. The concerts, held at a venue called Komünite, transcended typical seating arrangements, with the group engaging directly with the audience, moving among them and dancing with fans.

Sun Ra, a unique figure in 20th-century music history, viewed music not merely as sound or performance but as a cosmic force. He believed it could transform humanity, break mental barriers, and elevate the body and spirit beyond earthly constraints, acting as a gateway to other universes. His Arkestra, founded before his death in 1993, continues this philosophy as a spiritual collective rather than just a musical group.

This philosophy, initiated by Sun Ra, is now recognized as "Afrofuturism" and has become central to popular culture, spanning film and literature. For Sun Ra, however, it was not an aesthetic trend but a "manifesto for survival and liberation" for Black existence.

In a brief conversation, the Arkestra discussed how their "cosmic healing and awakening" mission adapts to the new crises and digital age of the 21st century. While the fundamental essence of their music remains, the emphasis has shifted. "We place much more emphasis today on musical mantras, the rhythmic flow (groove) we create, and Sun Ra's lyrics to elevate people's mental and spiritual frequencies," the group stated.

Reflecting on Sun Ra's foresight, the Arkestra noted his embrace of innovation. They believe that if Sun Ra were alive today, he would integrate artificial intelligence and digital technologies into his cosmic universe, likely having the entire group play electronic instruments and even generating visual designs during performances. This philosophical and technological vision is underpinned by a unique communal living practice, originating from a famous house in Philadelphia and passed down through generations, combined with Sun Ra's strict discipline.
