Sungkyul University Commemorates Reverend Kim Eung-jo's Legacy

Sungkyul University recently hosted a solemn memorial service to mark the 35th anniversary of the passing of the revered Reverend Yeong-am Kim Eung-jo. This event, held on April 16th, served as a powerful reminder of the profound legacy left by a man who was instrumental in both the Korean independence movement and the development of theological education in our nation.

The service, jointly organized by the Korean Evangelical Holiness Church General Assembly and the Yeong-am Kim Eung-jo Memorial Foundation, brought together faculty, students, church officials, and family members. It was a deeply moving occasion, reflecting the enduring respect and admiration for Reverend Kim's lifelong commitment to his faith and his unwavering dedication to education. The proceedings included heartfelt prayers, hymns, scripture readings, and a special performance by the theology department's praise team, Soli Deo.

We must become successors who properly inherit the legacy of faith left by the late Reverend Yeong-am Kim, and emphasize the importance of education that builds faith and character together, as shown by Pastor Kim.

Reverend Kim's contributions extended far beyond his pastoral duties. He was a pivotal figure during the Japanese colonial era, actively participating in the national movement for independence while simultaneously spreading the Gospel. His vision led to the establishment of the Holiness Theological Seminary, the precursor to Sungkyul University, where he served as the first president. His efforts laid a crucial foundation for theological education in Korea, shaping generations of leaders and thinkers.

As Sungkyul University President Jeong Hee-seok stated, Reverend Kim's faith and educational philosophy form the bedrock of the university's identity and mission. The memorial service was not just an act of remembrance but a reaffirmation of the commitment to carry forward his legacy.
