Sunshine Girls fall to New Zealand at Commonwealth Games

Jamaica's Sunshine Girls face an uphill battle in the Commonwealth Games netball competition after a narrow five-goal defeat to New Zealand. The team went down 48-53 in their second Pool B Preliminary Round game, held at the Hyra Arena in Glasgow, Scotland.

This loss follows a dominant opening victory where Jamaica thrashed Trinidad and Tobago 81-22. However, New Zealand, seeking revenge for a semi-final loss four years prior, managed to contain the Jamaican offense. Grace Nweke led the charge for New Zealand, netting an impressive 47 goals from 56 attempts, proving a significant challenge for the Jamaican defense.

Despite strong performances from Jamaica's Romelda Aiken, who scored 34 goals, and Shanice Beckford, with 14 goals, the Sunshine Girls could not overcome New Zealand's consistent scoring. New Zealand held a slim lead after the first quarter (14-12), extended it slightly by halftime (26-25), and maintained their advantage into the final period (39-35).

The defeat means Uganda now sits above Jamaica in the Pool B tables, having secured victories against Wales and Trinidad and Tobago. The Sunshine Girls will need to rebound quickly as they prepare to face Uganda next.
