Super Lig Derby Brings Goal-Scoring Battle Between Fenerbahce and Besiktas

The spotlight before Fenerbahce’s home derby against Besiktas is on the forwards. Both clubs began the season with championship ambitions and strengthened their attacks to pursue them.

Fenerbahce brought back former striker Vedat Muriqi before adding Romelu Lukaku. Besiktas entered the season with Hyeon-gyu Oh already in its squad and then signed Serbian forward Dusan Vlahovic. After nine matches across league and European qualifying competition, each side has scored 15 goals.

Fenerbahce scored eight of its goals in UEFA Champions League qualifying and seven in the league. Besiktas scored eight in UEFA Europa League qualifying and seven in domestic competition. Fenerbahce, however, also parted ways with Anderson Talisca, who had scored five of the team’s 15 goals.

That departure puts greater attention on Muriqi and Mason Greenwood. The pair have contributed seven goals this season. Greenwood has scored twice against Konyaspor in three league appearances and added goals against Sturm Graz and Olympique Lyonnais in qualifying. Muriqi has scored in each of his last two league matches and also found the net in the second leg against Lyon.

Vlahovic began his Besiktas scoring account with a hat-trick against Arca Corum FK. Orkun Kokcu and Vaclav Cerny have also scored three times each, making them part of Besiktas’s leading group as the derby approaches.
