Supreme Court blocks R$15.8 million land sale of Senator Jaques Wagner, target of police operation

Brazil's Supreme Court has halted the sale of a valuable plot of land owned by Senator Jaques Wagner, valued at R$15.8 million (approximately $2.8 million USD). The decision, issued by Justice André Mendonça, is linked to the ninth phase of "Operation Compliance Zero," an investigation scrutinizing alleged irregularities involving Banco Master.

The court order specifically prohibits the transfer of the land, stemming from restrictive measures imposed on June 18, 2026, when the operation targeted the senator. The interruption of the sale, which was confirmed by Folha and reported by O Estado de S. Paulo, occurred after the Federal Police's operation.

Senator Wagner's defense team has vehemently denied any wrongdoing. They assert that the land sale negotiations commenced prior to the investigations, initiated in 2024 and formalized in 2025. According to information from the Supreme Court and involved parties, the transaction was already in progress before the operation against the senator began.

Justice Mendonça had previously authorized search and seizure warrants and imposed economic restrictions, including the freezing of accounts, assets, and funds. Senator Wagner reportedly had watches seized as part of these measures. Notifications were sent to banks, notaries, and aviation authorities to prevent any ongoing transactions. The 1st Real Estate Registry Office of Camaçari (BA), where the land sale was registered, complied with Mendonça's order and blocked the transfer.
