Supreme Court rejects appeal in case of Kristina's killer

Poland's Supreme Court has rejected an appeal concerning the sentence for Jakub A., the convicted killer of 10-year-old Kristina from Mrowiny. The court upheld the decisions of lower courts, which found the perpetrator to be of sound mind when he committed the heinous crime in June 2019.

Supreme Court Justice Michał Laskowski stated in his justification for dismissing the appeal that the perpetrator's actions were "exceptionally precise, thought-out, rational." He elaborated that the offender's behavior demonstrated meticulous planning and preparation, which the courts and forensic experts had to consider. This assessment was central to refuting the defense's arguments, which primarily focused on the perpetrator's mental state at the time of the murder.

Kristina was murdered on June 13, 2019, after leaving school in the village of Mrowiny. Her body was discovered the same day in a forest approximately 6 kilometers away. The prosecution reported that the 10-year-old suffered 30 stab wounds to her chest and neck. Jakub A. was apprehended four days later, on June 16, 2019.

In October 2022, Jakub A. received a life sentence for the murder and for inciting the act beforehand. The District Court in Świdnica ruled that he would be eligible for parole after serving 30 years. This sentence was largely upheld by the Court of Appeal in Wrocław in February 2024, which also mandated that A. serve his sentence in a therapeutic system and increased the amount of compensation to be paid. The prosecution has withheld details about the motive for the crime out of consideration for the family's well-being, though local media had suggested a personal connection between the perpetrator and the victim's family.
