Supreme Court rejects bid to halt Nepali Congress general convention

Nepal's Supreme Court has declined to issue an interim order that would have halted the Nepali Congress party's general convention. Leaders Sher Bahadur Deuba and Purna Bahadur Khadka had petitioned the court to stop the proceedings, but a bench comprising Justices Nahakul Subedi, Mahesh Sharma Paudel, and Meghraj Pokharel rejected their request.

Supreme Court spokesperson Arjun Koirala confirmed that the court would not issue the requested interim order at this stage. While the court may consider further orders during the review petition hearing, its current decision allows the establishment faction of the Nepali Congress to proceed with its regular party activities. This includes preparations for the 15th general convention, scheduled to occur from October 2 to 5.

The petition by the Deuba-Khadka faction signals internal party conflict, particularly their rejection of Gagan Thapa's leadership, who was reportedly elected through the party's special general convention. The court's refusal to intervene immediately means the ongoing party processes can continue without judicial interruption for now.
