Surabaya Scouts Set Three MURI Records with Mass Semaphore, Foot-Washing Rituals

The Pramuka (Scouts) organization in Surabaya, East Java, achieved a remarkable feat by setting three new records recognized by the Indonesian World Records Museum (MURI) on Saturday, June 20, 2026. The events, held at various locations across the city including the Tugu Pahlawan and Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium, aimed to revitalize interest in the Scout movement among the younger generation.

The first MURI record was set for the "Largest Simultaneous Semaphore Performance by Scout Members," involving 41,337 participants. Scouts across Surabaya simultaneously demonstrated semaphore signals, showcasing a classic communication skill. The second record, "Largest Simultaneous Parental Foot-Washing Ritual by Scout Members," saw 130,000 participants washing the feet of their parents. This act symbolizes respect and filial piety, deeply ingrained values in Indonesian culture.

The third record achieved was for the "Largest Simultaneous Garuda Scout Affirmation," with 65,000 participants. This involved the affirmation of Scouts who have achieved the Garuda rank, the highest level in the Indonesian Scout movement, across different age groups: Siaga, Penggalang, Penegak, and Pandega. The simultaneous affirmation signifies a collective commitment to the Scout ideals.

These record-breaking events were organized with the explicit goal of reawakening the enthusiasm of young Indonesians for Pramuka. By engaging such a large number of participants in these meaningful and visually impressive activities, the organization hopes to inspire a new wave of interest and participation in scouting.
