Surging Passenger Numbers Prompt KAI to Expand Green Line Commuter Capacity

Indonesia's KAI Group is preparing to expand capacity on the Commuter Line Green Line as passenger numbers rise sharply. The company says demand toward Rangkasbitung has grown rapidly, making additional capacity increasingly important.

Anne Purba, KAI Group's vice president of corporate communication, said passenger contributions from the Cikarang and Rangkasbitung routes are now nearly equal, with Rangkasbitung approaching Bekasi's level. Bogor remains the biggest source of commuter passengers, accounting for 43.9%, but its share has fallen from about 60% as other routes have grown.

Cikarang and Bekasi together account for 24.7% of passengers, while Rangkasbitung now represents 22.5%. KAI is responding by expanding electrical capacity and moving toward 12-car trainsets. The company has tested the 12-car configuration but said more infrastructure work is needed before it can increase capacity.

If we look at the Cikarang and Rangkasbitung lines, their contributions are now almost equal. The volume in Rangkasbitung is nearly the same as Bekasi.

KAI says capacity depends not only on shortening intervals between departures, but also on how many passengers each trainset can carry. The company has expanded trains from four cars to eight and then 10, and is now working toward 12-car configurations.

The operator is also preparing station infrastructure and additional rolling stock for the Green Line. Its longer-term target is to have 36 trainsets available to support the service.
