Suspect Arrested for Attempting AI-Assisted Cheating in Turkish University Entrance Exam

An attempt to cheat using artificial intelligence during Turkey's Higher Education Institutions Exam (YKS) has led to an arrest. The incident occurred during the Alan Yeterlilik Testi (AYT) session on June 21st in Istanbul's Çekmeköy district.

Authorities launched an investigation into Mustafa Eren K., a 20-year-old candidate, who allegedly entered the exam hall with a mobile phone. He is accused of photographing exam questions and attempting to find answers using an AI application. Following the exam, a mobile phone was discovered during a body search of the candidate, leading to his detention.

According to a report by Sabah newspaper, the suspect stated during his interrogation that he carried the phone because he couldn't find a place to leave it. He claimed that during the exam, "in a moment of lapse," he considered taking photos of the questions and uploading them to the ChatGPT application. "It suddenly occurred to me," he reportedly said, explaining that he took pictures of pages 37 and 39 of the AYT exam's science question booklet with the intention of searching for answers on ChatGPT.

The Istanbul Anadolu Chief Public Prosecutor's Office requested the suspect's arrest on charges of "Violation of the Law on the Organization and Duties of the Measurement, Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM)." Consequently, Mustafa Eren K. was brought before the court and subsequently arrested and sent to prison.
